I Used to Play Flute, But Now I Don't

On the classical radio station this morning, I heard a flute solo I used to perform, always with standing ovations and rave reviews. It's called "Concertino" by Chaminade. I gave up playing my flute about 2 years ago, at age 54. I was getting frustrated that my level of expertise was much less than at my peak at age 18.

When Concertino was played on the radio, my fingers automatically tapped the imaginary flute keys to play in concert with the flute on the radio. I knew this piece by heart, still, after 40 years, and it brought a tear to my eye to know that I will never play that piece again.

My question is, how long can a high school band student maintain profiency on their instrument? Is 40 years better than average? I don't know, but all I know is I am a has-been.
